Running in the Shadows.

Here is a simple tip for you next long run.

Last Saturday I was at a race running a 15K. Before the race started the temperature was around 55 - 60 degrees with a light breeze . I was wearing shorts and a short sleeve shirt. I knew that I would be cold at the start of the race but I would warm up as soon as I started running.

About 2 miles into the race I felt good. I actually miss the cool breeze when it stop blowing. But as I warmed up so did the air temperature. By the end of the race I was getting pretty hot. The sun was raising and zapping my energy. Then I realized how important the shadows are, even in the winter.

Every time I run I take the shortest distance between two points, makes sense right? But if the road is straight, why not run on the side of the road that is shaded (if traffic allows). Here in South Georgia the winters are mild. So, if you are like me you dressed for the cold when you start out but an hour or two later the temperature has changed. – Take advantage of the shade from the trees. The little energy that you save could me the difference between bonking or having that little extra kick for the home stretch.
