Upcoming Local Races

I get questions all the time about races in the area. So, if you live in Albany or South Georgia here is a list of some upcoming local races. Even if you can't run a full 5K then sign up and do the 1 mile walk. The money stays here in South Georgia and generaly goes to a good cause. If you can't walk then come out and cheer on the runners because they will love it.

The Nun Run
This Saturday, Jan 31 will be the 2009 Nun Run. It will be held at St. Teresa's School and start at 8:15. The 2009 Nun Run will focus on “getting kids in the habit” of exercise with a 5K race and a 1 mile fun run. A Run & See Georgia Grand Prix event, the Nun Run also recognizes the religious sisters who founded St. Teresa’s School in 1945. Proceeds from the Nun Run benefit the school and the retirement fund for the Adorers of the Most Precious Blood, the religious order that founded the school.

All runners who “Beat the Running Nuns” are eligible for a special prize! There is also a FREE pancake breakfast for all participants and a guaranteed t-shirt for those registered by January 23. Awards include three deep medals in 15 age groups. The 5K race and 1 mile Fun Run courses wind through the neighborhoods surrounding St. Teresa’s School. The courses are mostly flat with a few grades and are perfect for runners, joggers, and walkers of all ages. Both events start and end at St. Teresa’s School, located on Edgewood Lane between Maryland Drive and Gillionville Road in Albany. This year, we expect more than 300 participants including our students, parents, faculty and staff along with runners from throughout Georgia, Florida and Alabama.

The cost will be $18. Online Registration closes on 1/29/09.

Kickin' Cavalier 5K

The Darton 5K and 1 mile fun run will be held on Saturday, February 21. This run will be in the afternoon starting at 4:00 PM. There is no online registration for this race. You can registration at Darton in the Cavalier Arena up utill Feb 21 and starting at 3:00 PM on race day.

T-shirts are not included with the entry fee so they can keep costs low. They will be selling T-shirts at the event however. All of the funds raised will go to the cross country program, and will be used as athletic scholarships for local athletes.

Albany MCLB Half Marathon / 5K Run

The Half Marathon will be held Saturday, February 7, 2009 at 8:00 a.m. 5K Run begins promptly at 8:20 a.m. There will be no pre-race packet pick-up for the Run. All runners will receive their race numbers and chips on the day of the race. T-Shirts and goody bags will be given out as runners register and receive their numbers.

There is a lot of more information about this race on their site like photos, course maps, and results from the past years.

I know that I'll be won't be able do the Nun Run because I'll be working this weekend. But I hope to do the MCLB Half Marathon and the Darton 5K. The Darton 5K sounds like it would be pretty cool. I've never done a race in the afternoon and I wonder how that would effect my time.
