Is it just me or is it the first mile the hardest mile to run? I’ve been running now for over three years. I’ve done four marathons, two half ironmans, a handful of half marathons, and countless 5K’s and 10Ks and you would think that running one mile would be easy for me by now. But everyday that I go for a run the first mile is always the hardest for me. It doesn’t matter if I going out for a 30 minute run or 3 hour run. The first mile is the toughest. I don’t know if it just takes me about a mile to get warmed up or if I so close to the house that if I turned back now I could be home and on the couch soon.
I don’t feel like I’m alone here. I imagine that other people struggle with the first mile of the run. I know a lot of people who take up running and then quit so soon. I wonder if it is because they can’t pass the first mile. It is almost like a mental wall for me. Sometime the hardest part is getting started.
Once I get past the first mile of the run I start to get in my rhythm. I can feel the endorphins kicking in and I’m getting my “Runner’s High”. After that I can run as long as I have enough water and nutrition to keep me going. It is like I’m on autopilot. I just keep putting one foot in front of the other.
Is the hardest part getting started? I know at work there are lots of training programs that I would like to start but haven't. I have several closet
So, what about you what is the hardest part of you run?

I don't know if I'd say specifically that the first mile is tough for me, but I definitely don't really warm up until 3-4 miles into a run. There are some days when, on long runs, I don't get into my "groove" until around 6 miles! So I understand your point, for sure.
No I'm the same way, if I can get through that first mile suddenly it's like "oh yeah I'm running and I like this" but at first it's like oh crap why is everything moving so fast and I'm breathing and moving and sweating, whyyyy.
Oh you are NOT alone! I hate that first mile, it is ALWAYS my slowest. when I push the pace I always burn out Very quickly, and my legs feel dead. For shorter races I do a mile warm-up now, gets that whole "slow" thing out of the way :)
Have you ever heard of oxygen deficit? That explains at least part of it.
For ME the worst part of the run....depends on the day. And the distance I'm doing that day.
